Why I Started Writing Children’s Books
How It All Began—and What Inspired Me
First, I’d like to say—this has been an incredible journey so far. I never really thought of myself as a writer. The only thing that truly prepared me for this was journaling my feelings over the last 20 years—connecting, analyzing, and doing my best to accurately put my emotions on the page.
I recently went back to school at the ripe age of 36 to become a nurse and earn my BSN. My first term included a writing class that unexpectedly sparked my interest in storytelling. I looked forward to class, soaking in everything I could—and then some. It turns out, I was actually pretty good at writing.
This led to a conversation with a friend. I asked her, “What would be your dream job?” She said she’d love to illustrate full time. I replied, “Hey, I’ve been feeling inspired by my writing class… what if I wrote children’s books and you illustrated them?”
And just like that, the ideas started flowing—children’s book concepts, company names, logos, you name it. Not long after, another friend joined in. She’s super artsy, a talented artist, an avid reader, and she knows her way around audiobooks. She was the perfect addition to our trio.
From that point on, we threw ourselves into building Moss & Moon Publishing from the ground up. It turns out, all three of us love writing and illustrating in our own unique styles. We’re each working on different projects, at various stages of development, which gives Moss & Moon a wonderful opportunity to reach a wide range of readers with diverse voices and creative approaches.
I began writing my first series, Dax’s Big Little Adventures, inspired by the wild and hilarious life we live with my youngest son, Dax. He’ll be two soon, and he’s as wild as the wind—constantly keeping me on my toes. My oldest son was quite the opposite (in all the best ways). He definitely inherited my creative streak—he’s a great little artist, and one day, I may even have him illustrate a book for me.
For me, starting Moss & Moon Publishing has been a family, friend, and community adventure. These stories are inspired by real life—with a few creative liberties. I’m doing this with friends who believe in the vision, and that feels amazing. And I hope to build a community that loves reading local authors’ work.
We’re Oregon-born, and growing alongside our community is important to us—because there’s always a story worth telling.
